No Beauty Mistake Has Ever Turned a Man Off

The caption says it all: “Women look sexy and feel sexy when they’re being themselves. If a dude is turned off by my bold lip, wait until he gets a load of my bold personality.”

(That!)

5 Reasons to Bat for #teamsingle This Valentine’s Day

Hey, you. Toss the Whitman’s Sampler aside and close that old Facebook album of you and your ex. Ignore the naysayers—batting for #teamsingle isn’t all that bad. One day out of the entire year heightens our awareness, but actually we’re #winning for the remaining 364. Behold, my top 5 reasons why.

1. Love Don’t Cost a Thing

Remember the days when construction paper heart cutouts and a splash of glitter did the V-Day trick? That was in kindergarten. Today, most folks are blinded by bling. The candy, flowers, lavish dinners and other presents adds up quickly. #Teamsingle is lucky—we can pocket that cash and put it to good use! Now excuse me while I log on to Bloomingdale’s website…

2. Sweatpants, Hair Tied, Chillin’ with no Makeup On

I hate to rain on your parade…jk, I love it. According to the Weather Channel, Valentine’s Day will be cold, rainy and snowy for many cities this year. While the taken will be hopping over puddles in their Jeffrey Campbells and Ferragamos, #teamsingle will be at home in slippers and Snuggies. Win.

3. Go to Sleep in Paris, Wake Up In Tokyo

When you don’t have a S.O., there’s the beautiful option of making time in your busy schedule for y-o-u. Use it to your advantage! See a movie you want to see; visit places you want to go. There’s no need to compromise or flip a coin when you’re in a party of one.

4. Thank You for Being a Friend

We all have that one friend who can’t detach themselves from their phone. At group outings, they’re too busy cooing sweet nothings and giggling at cutesy text messages to have a good time. So. Annoying. Being single allows you to be a better listener and pay attention to your pals—your head isn’t filled with thoughts of your S.O. and you’re not doodling your hyphenated name on the margins of the dinner menu.

5. Come Here, Rude Boy

It’s okay to have a roving eye when you’re single, of course. Use your status to your advantage! Have lunch with the quiet cutie in your English class, talk to complete (but safe) strangers on the Metro, and flirt until your eyelashes fall off from batting. Who knows? You may be on the other team next year…if that’s what you’re into.

Things that are sexy…

We couldn’t resist chiming in on the #ThingsThatAreSexy conversation raging late last week on Twitter. (We said “The right birth control & someone to share it with.”) We noticed some interesting themes while we were perusing the conversation—namely lip biting, confidence, tattoos, and natural beauty. We won’t argue with those. But we went ahead and took it a step further and chose a few tweets we thought were adorable, hilarious, or just plain awesome to share. Enjoy and tell us what we missed!

Hoorah for body peace!! You do not defeat one oppression by starting another! When we make fun of each other for our body types we enforce the standard! The lesson is, all bodies are beautiful, no better, no worse, we are all different and unique, isn’t that wonderful?!

5 Tips For Meeting “The One” - Or Just Someone

Originally published on SexReally.com on May 18, 2011.

As you may or may not have noticed, I talk a lot about dating—what to do, what not to do, how to decide who to go out with, etc, etc—but in order to date someone, you have to meet them first. That’s why I talked to some people about where they meet potential dates in my latest vlog. But whether it’s at the Club, at school, or even on the street, it’s also key to have a good strategy for making sure you actually get to talk to Mr. or Ms. Right once you’ve crossed paths.

Here are 5 tips I’ve picked up from my interviews:

1. Leave the Entourage at Home.

I will be the first to admit that when going out, sometimes my girlfriends are like my cab money—I never leave home without them. Yes, having good friends around is great for a guaranteed fun night, but a big group of friends is not necessarily helpful when a cute guy or gal is debating whether or not to ask you your name. Anslem and Janelle had experience with this one:

2. Be Approachable.

I know a lot of us live by the motto “If it’s meant to be, it’ll be”, but sometimes we are “meant” to help the process along a little. One easy way I’ve found to be more approachable is to simply smile more. at the very least, it helps to avoid walking around looking stressed, unhappy, or hostile. A pleasant expression and attitude can go a long way in making someone comfortable enough to talk to you.

3. Live Your Best Life.

You want to meet somebody. So you plan to meet somebody. You dress to meet somebody. Just to be out stressing about meeting somebody when you really should—in the words of Rihanna—just live your life! It works for Lorraine:

4. Confidence Is Key.

I think almost everyone is attracted to confidence. So walk with purpose! Dress to impress! (Which includes dressing appropriately for where you’re going.) And if you see someone you’re attracted to, find a reason to talk to them. And if the prospect of any of this frightens you at all… Fake it til you make it and take comfort in the fact that everyone else is doing the same thing!

5. When It Comes to Pick-up Lines… Keep It Simple!

When you’re ready to express that you’re looking for something more than pleasant chit-chat with a person you’re attracted to, don’t overdo it with the one-liners! Lorraine, Luwin, and Janelle have some examples of lines that worked, and lines that really didn’t:

Have you used any of these strategies? Did they work for you? Any tips of your own to share?
